Creatine. NAD+. Glutathione. Collagen. Omega-3s. Probiotics.
The functional ingredient list keeps getting longer, louder and shinier. Every week, there seems to be a new must-have active being added to supplements, drinks, sachets, gummies, powders and everything in between.
But here’s the uncomfortable bit.
Adding a trending ingredient to a label does not automatically create a product that works.
And it definitely does not guarantee a product consumers will buy again.
At Virun®, we spend a lot of time explaining this, usually after someone has already discovered the hard way that formulation is not quite as simple as sprinkling in the ingredient of the moment and hoping for the best.
Because the ingredient is only part of the story.
Bioavailability matters. Stability matters. Packaging matters. Format matters. Taste matters. And, slightly inconveniently, all of these things tend to matter at the same time.
That is exactly why we are sharing two new resources for brands, formulators and anyone developing functional products that actually need to make it to shelf, stay stable and be enjoyed by real human beings.
Our latest podcast with Nombase: Functional Ingredients Are Everywhere, features Philip Bromley, CEO and co-founder of Virun®, and Sara Fenn, Virun’s Director of Marketing, discussing what really separates effective functional products from expensive label claims.
The conversation explores why adding another active is not always the answer, how delivery systems affect performance, why packaging can make or break a formula, and why taste is not a fluffy marketing extra. It is often the difference between a product someone tries once and a product they come back to every day.
Because let’s be honest: if your active degrades in water, oxidises in the wrong packaging, tastes like punishment, or never reaches the body properly, you may have created a beautiful label.
You just may not have created a very useful product.
Alongside the podcast, we have also partnered with BEVNET to release a free industry e-book: Why Most Formulations Fail Before They Ever Reach the Shelf.
The e-book takes a deeper look at the formulation mistakes that quietly derail promising products long before consumers ever get the chance to try them. We look at ingredient compatibility, water activity, oxidation, bioavailability, packaging decisions, preservative use, and why formulation should come before packaging — not after everything has already been designed, printed and emotionally committed to.
It also explores some of the questions we see again and again: Why do certain ingredients struggle in water? Why are some formats more suitable than others? Why do dropper bottles often create more problems than they solve? Why does oxygen control matter? And why do low water activity and lipid-based systems help create cleaner, more stable products with fewer unnecessary additives?
The reason we wanted to bring the podcast and e-book together is simple.
The podcast gives you the bigger conversation: the thinking, the experience, the slightly rebellious formulation philosophy behind what we do.
The e-book gives you the practical breakdown: the technical reasons products fail, and the decisions brands can make earlier to avoid expensive reformulation, disappointing shelf life, poor repeat purchase and the dreaded “great idea, terrible execution” problem.
Together, they make the same point from two angles.
Functional products should do more than look clever on a label.
They should survive the formulation process. They should remain stable through shelf life. They should deliver the active properly. They should taste good enough for people to take consistently. And they should be built around the reality of the ingredient, not just the excitement of the trend.
Because the future of functional nutrition will not be won by the brands with the longest ingredient list.
It will be won by the brands that understand delivery, stability, experience and compliance.
In other words, the brands that make products people can actually use — and actually want to use again.
